North Cape (Honningsvag) | Thursday, Aug 03, 2023 | Thursday, Aug 03, 2023 |
Honningsvag/North Cape, Norway Welcome to the top of the world! The village of Honningsvag is the northernmost community in Europe, set in a land of vast forests, dramatic fjords and crashing waterfalls, bathed in the eerie light of the Midnight Sun. Just up the coast is the North Cape, Europe's northernmost point, with breathtaking views towards the Barents Sea and the polar north.
Hammerfest | Thursday, Aug 03, 2023 | Thursday, Aug 03, 2023 |
Hammerfest, the world's northern-most city with a population of 7,000 residents, is located in the wide but calm bay of the Province of Finnmark. The North Atlantic Gulf Stream provides the city with an ice free port all year round. Hammerfest's short distance from the North Cape makes it an attractive destination to tourists. Like Tromso, Hammerfest became a major location for the start or end of arctic expeditions in the 19th century. In 1890, the town was one of the first in Europe to provide electric street lighting. Of course, the sun's disappearance from the sky during the arctic winter from November through February may have contributed to this distinction. Today the main street shops of this interesting trawler port offer a friendly welcome, and the drily -named 'Polar Bear Club' provides intriguing insights into Arctic history and tradition.

The small town of Harstad, 75 miles northwest of Narvik, sits surrounded by craggy, snow-topped mountains on the island of Hinnøya. Harstad’s greatest attraction is the Trondenes Church which dates back to the 13th century. This structure was originally built as a fortress church; its design incorporates massive walls, some 7 1/2 feet thick. At the time, Trondenes was also Norway’s northernmost stone church and one of the most important in the country during Roman Catholic times. As early as the Viking Age the church was used as a local gathering place, including the meetings of the Ting (local parliament). Serving as the breadbasket for northern Norway, this region provides seasonal fruits and vegetables for nearby marketplaces. Harstad’s pretty setting with hilly streets, rainbow-colored wooden houses, terraces and views of the mountains is especially appreciated by the summer crowd which flocks here to enjoy the North Norwegian Arts Festival and International Deep-Sea Fishing Festival, usually held in June and July.

Hurtigruten ships are working vessels operating a regular service to a set timetable. The ships carry goods, vehicles, and passengers between ports, by night and day, as an integral part of Norwegian daily life. Hurtigruten ships are calling at ports around the clock.
It is a safety requirement that all Hurtigruten passengers attend a compulsory safety briefing in Bergen before the ship leaves port. After check-in, and prior to embarkation, please go to the first floor of the terminal building where the safety briefing will be given at regular intervals by Hurtigruten staff. This briefing will last between 10 – 15 minutes with the first taking place at 3:45pm (embarkation is from 4pm, also from the first floor). The talk will include a demonstration of how to put on a life jacket, and the instructions to be followed in the unlikely event of an evacuation or other emergency during the voyage. The briefing is compulsory for all passengers including those who have traveled with Hurtigruten on previous occasions. There will be an opportunity to ask questions if you have any concerns. Guests may embark immediately upon completion of the safety briefing. The last briefing will take place at 7:30pm. Guests arriving after this time will be required to attend a safety meeting on board at 8pm, before the ship leaves Bergen.
Please take time to familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures as shown in the cabins (there is a diagram on the cabin door and in public areas), and ask at reception if in doubt.
In many ports there may be a good deal of activity on the quay with cars joining/ leaving the ships, and/or goods being loaded or unloaded. Please be alert to such traffic when embarking and disembarking. Take care during winter months when it is icy underfoot, particularly on the outside decks and when disembarking the ship or alighting from coaches. Ice spikes and other winter clothing can be purchased in the ship's store. Do not carry large amounts of cash and keep valuable items, including mobile telephones and cameras, out of sight.
Smoking is only permitted in designated areas on the outside decks. It is not permitted when the ships are in port and fueling. The staff will advise when it is not allowed to smoke outside. Smoking in the cabins is prohibited and subject to a fine.
If you have special dietary requests, please inform Hurtigruten at the time of booking. They will do their best to meet such requests but cannot guarantee they will be able to do so. Special requests will not be accepted by Hurtigruten as part of the contractual agreement. Passengers on strict diets, such as vegan/vegetarian, may find that there is a limited choice.
Hurtigruten is happy to welcome guests who are not fully mobile. All ships (except MS Lofoten) have at least one cabin equipped for travelers using a wheelchair. Guests who use a wheelchair must bring their own, standard sized, foldable chair. Guests who need assistance in order to get around may need to travel with a companion. Those who are able to navigate around the ship unaided in a wheelchair need not have a travel companion. Please discuss this matter with your booking agent.
In mainland Norwegian ports there is a ramp for embarkation/disembarkation.
Excursions have not been adapted specifically for passengers with walking difficulties. Please contact Hurtigruten, or the Tour Leader once onboard, for additional information regarding suitable excursions .
